MoMA - Visual Strategy Redesign

Background: I crafted the home, primary navigation, and secondary navigation page redesigns as part of my second assignment for my web design class (IDCC 370 Web Design I: Information Design, Principles and Practices) at my university.

Client: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Objective: Create a redesign of the client's visual design strategy, relating it to the site content and the user experience

MoMA strives to be the world's leading museum of modern art. The museum commits to sharing a more profound understanding and appreciation towards modern and contemporary art.

Part of MoMA's branding identity incorporates the juxtapositions of artwork and a brighter color palette to create a bold, contemporary image, as described by Pentagram, MoMA's design consultant. With this in mind, I found a painting with bright blue hues for the main background of the home page. Within the painting, it looked like the paint strokes resembled the word "ART", so I adjusted the color balance of those paint strokes to make them black. This stark contrast of the black paint against the bright blue nods to MoMA's bold, contemporary brand identity.

The second page is a redesigned MoMA primary navigation page, specifically 'Events', in this case. Upcoming events at MoMA are showcased as paintings on a wall, which is illuminated by an overhead light that shines bright enough for the word 'Events' to stand out. Clicking each of the 'event' paintings would theoretically lead to a secondary navigation page that includes more details about that specific event.

The third page is a secondary navigation page for the event, "Open Mic Night". To maintain consistency across designs, the secondary navigation page has the same background as the 'Events' primary navigation page. The secondary navigation page title, "Open Mic Night" is illuminated, again, by the overhead light. The same image used to depict the Open Mic Night event on the 'Events' primary navigation page is pictured to the right of the Open Mic Night description. The event decsription features the date, time, location, and a brief overview of details related to Open Mic Night. Below the description is a button that would lead to an artist inquiry form for artists interested in showcasing their work at Open Mic Night.
